Week 12 Blog Post

Hello, friends.

I hope that you are all having a great week. My week has been and probably will continue to be, very busy. This week, we are planning a classroom management event and hosting Elic Senter from SNCAE. I am excited to see what I can learn from this professional development. There is always something new to learn in teaching; it is one of the big reasons that I love this profession. Going to professional development conferences align with the NCPTS perfectly. Standard one says, "Teachers lead the teaching profession." I am so thankful for opportunities like this at GWU.

In my research, I have been on the lookout for technology tools that help with literacy/reading comprehension and HOT strategies for my future classroom. For the technology tool, I found a great way to check for comprehension in any video. It is called https://vizia.co/videos. You can insert a quiz, poll, or open-ended question any video. It is so neat. The second thing that I found for HOT skills is a socratic seminar. I had never heard of this before, or so I thought. The article below outlines how rethinking group discussions can enhance the HOT skills that students have.

Both of these would be great to use in my future classroom. I used the technology in my flipped lesson plan this week, and it would be a great use for my classroom in the future if I were to flip my class.

An encouraging word,

Be encouraging to everyone you meet. Everyone is going through something!

Much love,
Mallory

  1. Hi Mallory,
Thank you for those great websites. I have never heard of Vizia before until now. By integrating information into the video, I will be able to make it more real to the children so they will be able to actively partipicate in the information. I would also like to share a app with you that I just found today called toontastic. Students can actually create videos using cartoon characters. I like your comment at the end. So many times I get caught up in my own life that I neglect to see all the poeple struggling around me. As you say, I am not the only one struggling.
I hope you have a great week.

  2. Mallory, I can totally relate to you about having a super busy and stressful week. The last thing you said in your blog is so important because it really is the little things like a small encouragement to turn your crazy stressful day around. I also loved that website that you used for your flipped lesson plan. I wish that I had known about it before I made my video because it is super engaging and a great resource so thanks for sharing!

  3. Mallory,
I really hate the classroom management session did not work out. I was really looking forward to it. Hopefully it can be rescheduled, though. I really enjoy reading through your blog posts. The encouraging words you leave are much appreciated. Encouragement goes a long way, for us as college students, and for our future students. They need encouragement just as much as us! Thank you for sharing this information.

  5. Mallory, Thank you so much for the resources, those are really neat! Also, thank you for the encouraging phrase at the end! Sometimes that's all you need to have peace when you've been very busy. I hope things become less stressful for all of us!
